Taxis in Quito

Posted On: Apr 16, 2013

by Rick Segreda. My first reaction to Vandana's proposal, via email,  about an alliance between documentary filmmakers and cab drivers  was befuddlement -- wha...taxis? journalists? But the more I studied it, the more intriguing it became. As it is, I am a bilingual, bi-national (Ecuadorian, American) journalist based out of Quito, and depend on taxis a lot, especially in the… View Full Post

Status of women in India

And the masses are ablaze, angered and active. And I am perplexed. Because to be honest, Indian women, especially in New Delhi have been eve teased, groped and raped for awhile now. It's… View Full Post

THE CATALYST

THE TAXI TAKES ON TERROR

The Taxi Takes on Terror is a web video project based on conversations between taxi drivers and passengers in Mumbai cabs about modern Terrorism. It consists of several short films that are centered around the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks of 2008. Vandana Sood-Giddings shot these videos through a social intervention and by driving in the front seat with several Mumbai taxi drivers over a period of two months. This project and her work with New York City taxi drivers was the impetus and idea behind The Taxi Takes on the World.

ABOUT TAXI TAKES ON THE WORLD

A single interaction in life can change a choice or a deed. An honest and spontaneous encounter between two strangers in a cab can make us have a moment. In that moment we think differently about a person or issue that we assumed we knew a lot about. On one hand technology draws us closer together and never before have we had so much information at our fingertips. However, technology often creates even more room for misunderstanding  and stereotypes by spreading second hand information. This project seeks to address the challenges of our information age by focusing on broad topics like religious and ethnic conflict, war and terror, race, gender class and culture. Each of these global topics has regional nuances that the mainstream media often overlooks. Through the prism of the taxi, where every day people from often widely disparate backgrounds meet, this user generated project will tell a story about how, given the right space, we all can understand each other and speak a common language.  By dynamically collecting and sharing the world’s perspectives The Taxi Takes on the World aims to create an online platform that informs and educates us about each other.
